Diagram of a Pointe Shoe
diagramenpointe.gif

The picture above is a diagram of the anatomy of a pointe shoe. It's important to be able to recognize all the parts of a pointe shoe, so you know what to look for when you are buying them, especially your first pair. When I was a beginning pointe dancer, pointe work was not pleasant. It was so much nicer to watch than to do. You'll see when you start it is much different than flat shoe dancing. To be honest, it will be very painful! But it will grow on you, and you will find your own ways to make some of the pain go away.

*~*Your First Fitting*~*
When the day comes that your teacher says you are ready, and you may buy a pair of pointe shoes, you'll be absolutely thrilled! If you prefer, you can make an appointment, otherwise, most places don't mind walk-ins. Your foot will be thoroughly measured and you may have to try on many pairs of pointe shoes until you find the perfect fit. The salesperson will ask you to step up onto pointe and will make sure the shoes fit perfectly. Then she will explain how to sew on the ribbons and elastic. Good luck!
